Beach People

I just completed this piece January 10, 2011.  I documented the steps to show how the piece developed. I never have a completed image in mind because some things that I do with the subject just don’t work.  The wood figure led me in the “beach” direction because it suggested a person holding an umbrella.  I added the yellow and white umbrella at the end to reinforce the theme.  Because I was working with the book format the inside of the cover had to have something on it.  The drawing in pencil of the 8 beach figures developed, all looking out to sea.  The tier method allowed me to separate the men from the women.  I have no idea why I separated them, so don’t read anything into that.  I guess I was thinking of the Egyptian wall paintings with the various tiers.  My abstract figures have a variety of material draped over their bodies to suggest some form of covering.  The only thing that suggests the different sexes is the hair length.

The last two painting are small pieces I did as quick studies from larger paintings just to find different interpretations.
